Hakka Abacus seeds

This rare traditional Hakka dish (Abacus Seed or Suan Pan Zi) is eaten during festive celebrations like Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival for prosperity. It is known to have originated from the Hakka district of Dabu, in Guangdong, China. Some prepared this prosperity dish to humor the old folks during festive, as it signifies that they will have an abundance of wealth to count up on their abacus for the year.

Edmund specially ordered this Abacus seeds so that I could try and it was delicious. A plate of Hakka Abacus seeds cost $3.50. Those who prefer chewy taste should try this! Its is round in shape and fried with minced meat with little gravy to go along with the seeds. After eating such a unique dish, I decided to check out other places that actually served such dish. But apparently, I was told that there issit out there now. Pretty sad. I also read upon that this Hakka dish is known for being a 'difficult' dish.  The multiple steps of having to steam, mould the dough seeds, boil and then fry them can be very time-consuming.  Also, the dough to form need to have the right consistency to have a slight 'spring' or chewiness in texture.  A well-formed abacus seed should be no bigger than the size of an abacus bead, smooth and shiny (when cooked) with no cracks.

Big Prawn noodle at Lavender Food Market

亚巴街大虾面
Address
380 Jalan Besar, #01-10 Lavender Food Square

Business Hours
Daily: 10am – 3am
(Closed Alt Thu)

We love Prawns! There are Har kow, Black pepper prawn, Cereal prawn, Prawn cracker and not forgetting Prawn noodle! This delectable bowl of giant prawn noodle can be found in the singapore's central food haven, Lavender food market. Did I mentioned 'GIANT', Yes! the prawns compared to those shrinking ones you find in ordinary prawn noodle is the defining factor. Each bowl of giant prawn noodle cost $5 and to some, it seems rather expensive.

This prawn noodle has the most succulent giant prawn we have ever tried. Every bite entice you for more of it. Indeed, as the signboard named 'BIG PRAWNS', but when it comes to the broth we felt that it is not as flavored as Beach Road prawn noodle at East Coast. For those who savour the soup of prawn noodles should patronise the outlet at siglap, while for those who can't do without the big juicy prawns, should try the one at Lavender Food Market !

Prawn noodle house at East Coast

Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House
Address
370 East Road Road
Singapore 428981
Tel: 63457196

Business hours
Daily: 8am – 4pm
(Closed on Tue)

This is one of the well-known prawn mee noodle in East Coast and if you happen to be around the area, do satisfy your stomach with the tasty and big prawn mee or the prawn mee pork ribs.

The best thing about this prawn mee is the soup. The soup taste perfect with the QQ noodles and easy to peel off the prawn shells. However, some may find the soup a little oily. Next to it is a stall selling ngoh hiang, century egg, chinese sausage, and all the friedelicious food! We went around lunch time 2.30pm and the crowd was expected. We ordered two bowls of prawn noodles, ngoh hiang and some fried fish cake.

Overall, the prawn mee is definitely second best to Lavender Market Big Prawns, but the soup is incomparable to any so far. Given the big portion, the price of a bowl is $4.50 onwards. For those who weight food over price, this should be listed in your foodhunt list, while for those who feel that a plate of chicken rice should not cost more than $2, should still consider giving this a try, at least ONCE !

There are quite a few dessert shops along Liang Seah. Besides Ah Chew Desserts, Ji De Chi is up for challenge. The portion was so small that I finished the whole bowl within the next few minutes. Yummy !

There are many variety of desserts up for grabs.

Business Hours

This Dim Sum restaurant has established itself for more than 50years, probably your parents and even grandparents had patronised it. Located within the central food haven  near Mustafa, Swee Choon serves yummy Shanghai and Hong kong style dim sum. The price slightly pricier, with the food and varieties comparable with Geylang 126.

We have Ryan and Yiling with us this time for our late night supper hunt. :) We were there at about 11pm, there was a queue in front of the cafe but the wait was short. The good news were there was seats outside and pre-order was possible. One of the must try here is their authentic mee sua kueh. Some like and dislike about this kueh, it is very crispy on the outside while soft and moist in the inside. The beancurd prawn roll was filled with plenty of fresh prawn and was surprisingly better than 126. The good size soupy xiaolong bao filled us with the touch of good old Shanghaiese Dim sum.

In all Swee choon has a good ambience, price wise is slightly more than 126 and its dim sum has a standard comparable with 126. :)

National Vertical Marathon 2011

National Vertical Marathon 2011 was held at One Raffles Place for the 13th year. It was definitely one of a kind Lover's Challenge experience for both of us.
It was said that 'Climbing is the act of using one's hands and feet to ascend a steep object'. It came across to me as a simple task to climb up the flight of stairs, but NO easy feat my friends.

Our race time was 1430 and every 5 mins interval, they will released a couple up the stairs. Initially, I thought I could make it to at least 40 storeys non-stop, but what guess what, I barely reached 20 storeys and my legs crumble. Edmund had to carry me on his back thrice. Poor him.  Overall, it was a romantic and challenging race to complete in order to reach the top!! We received a finisher medal, loads of goodies and certificate of achievement! Most importantly, it was a great experience that we both shared together.  :)

* Edmund's favorite line: Two steps and two steps, swing ur arms, swing ur arms, big stride come on big stride ! :)

Yong He beancurd at Geylang

Yong He Beancurd
Address
517 Geylang Road Lorong 27A

Business Hours
Opens 24hours daily

Those who enjoy savouring beancurd together with youtiao (deep-fried dough) should drop by Yong He Beancurd eating house. It serves delicious crispy youtiao that goes perfectly with a bowl of hot/cold beancurd.

We were around the area for a meal and crave for some light hot/cold desserts... beancurd, so we decided to head to Yong He instead of Selegie which was quite far.
This would probably be my 4th time visiting this cafe and I still prefer the beancurd at Selegie.  It is much silkier but their youtiao is definitely not as good as the Yong He. Come to think of it, been a long time since i patronise the Selegie beancurd. I wonder if they maintain their standard.

Besides their specialities, Yong He served Dim sums and other small dishes. Have not tried most of the tim sums yet because we are a frequent customers of 126 DIM SUM and Swee Choon. Hmmm..

This is one of our favourite supper spots. Wen Dao shi 搵到食as the name coincided with its address 126 sim avenue serves tim sum 24/7. This eating place smacks right in the heart of Singapore's famous red light district, which is no other than geylang. Selling tim sum at ok prices, hungry customers flow in seamlessly every hour. There was once we were there at 2am, it was still packed.

Our favourite includes fried prawn rolls, Har kow, kong bau, and not forgetting the must-have big chunk century-egg minced meat congee.

Dipping and savouring each bit in their dou-jiang chilli signals our senses to want more of everything. This is definitely one of the few heavenly late night supper spots in sg.
